Snow at Night

about

This song is a collaboration with Portland poet Peter Sears (1937 – July 20, 2017). I met Peter several times and we talked about everything from art, poetry, music, language and the great, ever-present mystery of life. His amazing poem, Snow at Night really struck a chord with me. I asked if he would mind if I were to set it to my weird experimental music and he was totally open to it and supportive! Used with permission by the author, with immense gratitude.

Peter passed away in July of 2017 and I dedicate this track to him. Read his wonderful poems!

Snow At Night

Poem by Peter Sears "Snow At Night" from Orion. Copyright © 1997 by Peter Sears.

I go so far away that from there I can hear
myself talking to someone and an echo like
when you turn away from a river and you can't tell
if it's the river right then or a sound
of the river echoing through you. I want
to go there and watch in the eddies near shore
the caught sticks turning, popping back,
then turning again, as if they would break in two
to shake free. I'm like snow at night in a field.
Most of the time you can't see it; then it glistens.
